Sonic Karmageddon: Howard Schultz Rips Gary Payton at Book Event, Clay Bennett Named Head of NBA's Relocation Committee

Howard Schultz refuses to deal with bitter Sonic fans who want to voice their opinions at his book signings, but the Starbucks chairman isn't applying the same muzzle to his own yapper. As reported on Dave Grosby's radio show on ESPN 710-AM, Schultz ripped Sonic legend Gary Payton for being selfish during a book event in Chicago. Amazingly, that's not the scariest sign of NBA Hypocralypse, as the league has named Clay Bennett to head up its relocation committee.

We'll say this for NBA Commissioner David Stern: He definitely picked the owner with the most experience in the capacity of relocation, a critical post in light of the Sacramento Kings' threatened move to Anaheim. But relocation shouldn't be a rubber stamp. To the contrary, hijacking a franchise should be about as challenging as amending the U.S. Constitution, and the head of the relocation committee should at least be able to feign the role of protectionist.

But Bennett clearly will have no credibility in this regard as he considers the Kings' plight. Naming him head of a relocation committee is tantamount to Bud Selig selecting Barry Bonds to recommend penalties for steroid abusers, or Pete Rose to rework Major League Baseball's gambling policy.
