Hide your foreskins, kids! Portland mother Keemonta Peterson just posted bail and is headed back to her home/DIY snip-clinic. Soon she'll head back to court though, charged with performing a botched home circumcision on her son.
The Oregonianreports that the 29-year-old mother of four allegedly tried to circumcise her 3-month-old child at home, but halfway through, realized she'd screwed up royally and called 911.
Portland police began investigating Peterson after responding to a call for medical help at 2 a.m. Oct. 24 at a house near East Burnside Street and 127th Avenue. The boy was rushed to a local hospital and initially listed in critical condition. Information about his health status today was not available.
Details on why Peterson tried to perform the circumcision herself are unclear, other than her saying it was for "religious reasons."
The incident itself happened back in late October. And after a month-long investigation, Peterson was charged with first-and-second-degree assault and first-degree criminal mistreatment.
She was jailed initially on $500,000 bail, but this week Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge David Rees agreed to reduce her bail to $5,000, meaning that with a bond agent she only had to post $500 to get out.
Her trial will begin in June.
In the meantime, those seeking circumcisions are encouraged to only trust licensed medical professionals.
