Reporters Named Bud Should Be Banned From Criticizing Bud

The Seattle Times' Bud Withers is perhaps the best sportswriter in Seattle. Again, his first name is Bud. And today, Bud has a column entitled "Cannabis Problem Troubling for Cougs." His byline is, of course, Bud Withers. That could very well serve as the column's subhead, but if it did, it'd be inaccurate. Bud--the person or the pot--is hardly withering.

Pot is nearly legal; today's Times has a report on how the "nearly" status is " target="_blank">causing, not preventing, crime as well, and the publication's editorial board has come out in favor of full legalization. Any Cougar who smokes pot the night before a game might play a little too much Tetris and eat a few too many Cheetos, but it's a far more harmless option than getting blitzkrieged on a half-rack of Natty Light. Unlike pot, that's fully legal, and neither are performance-enhancing.

But more importantly, Withers' first name is Bud. If you're a Bud and you criticize bud, that's like a reporter named Smokey criticizing barbecue, forest fires, or the Smoky Mountains. It just shouldn't be permitted, not by a Bud (or a Smokey) anyway.

OK, Happy Friday. Four-twenty's less than a month away.
