Kiyoshi Higashi, the neck-tattooed accused ringleader of the so-called "Craigslist Killers" has some Biblical lessons for the family he's admitted to terrorizing. It involves the book of Matthew, chapter five, verse 39.
"These are supposed to be Christian people. It says in the Bible that you shall turn the other cheek, well I don't see the other cheek being turned . . . Not only was the victim's family hurt, my family was hurt that day. I was hurt . . . My dad cried about it, you know? For you all to hate me for that and look at me as a hateful and a monster, that's incorrect."
Higashi, Joshua Nathan Reese, Amanda Knight, and Clabon Berniard are each charged with murder in the April 2010 slaying in which the crew showed up at the Sanders house pretending to be interested in buying Charlene Sanders' wedding ring, which she had put up for auction on Craigslist. Once inside the house, however, the four tied up Charlene and Jim and ordered their children downstairs before demanding that the hostages show them where the "safe" was. There was no safe, and when Sanders tried to free himself from the bonds, someone (prosecutors say it was Higashi) shot him three times and killed him.
Higashi's version of the events are:
"I didn't shoot nobody that night, I didn't beat nobody that night. I tied somebody up."
Not that it matters whether Higashi pulled the trigger or not. All the defendants are considered responsible for murder, since the killing took place during the commission of a felony.
But Higashi's self-centered brow-beating is unlikely to do him any favors when it comes time for sentencing.
