Gary Ridgway, Green River Killer, Charged With Murder #49, but Still Won't Face Execution

The deal is that Gary Ridgway, the "Green River Killer," has to plead guilty to all the murders he's confessed to in King County; and as long as he does, the state won't execute him. So with forthcoming aggravated murder charges announced today in the death of Rebecca "Becky" Marrero--that's murder #49 for those keeping track at home--the expected guilty plea will bear little consequences for Washington's most prolific serial killer.

The latest development stems from when some kids found Marrero's skull in a ravine in Auburn this past December.

Ridgway had apparently already confessed to killing the woman, and it was just a matter of gathering physical evidence before formal charges could be filed.

But under the original 2003 plea agreement, which saw Ridgway plead guilty to 48 murders, the state will have to be content to watch him serve 48 (49, soon) consecutive life sentences and an extra 480 years tacked on for tampering with evidence.

King County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Satterberg was less than triumphant when announcing the charges, saying, according to the P-I, that he hoped it would give "a degree of justice" for the Marrero family.

If nothing else, it will give Ridgway a quick field trip away from his cell to go to court.
