Richard Thomas, Spokane Man, Locks Himself in Taco Bell Refrigerator, Dies Mysteriously

A man walks into a restaurant. He goes straight to the back and opens the walk-in refrigerator, then climbs in and locks the door. Employees call police, they show up, pry open the door, and find the man dead . But he apparently didn't die of the cold, and there are no signs of violence. So what happened?

That's the question Spokane police--or, rather, the Spokane County Medical Examiner--is wrestling with now after they found 42-year-old Richard Thomas dead inside a walk-in fridge at a Taco Bell on North Monroe Street and West Boone Avenue on Monday.

The Spokesman-Review reports that Taco Bell employees saw the man come in at around 8 p.m. on Monday and immediately lock himself in the cooler.

They called police right away, and it didn't take long for the cops to unhinge the door, open the cooler, and find the man.

But without any obvious clues as to what killed him (no drugs were reported at the scene, and he is described as dressed normally), an autopsy is now taking place.
