It was a bit of a long shot to begin with, but with the massive upstart success of the Seattle Sounders and a solid infrastructure to host a world class event, there was a lot of buzz that the United States and then Seattle would be chosen to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Neither happened this morning at the World Cup announcements in Zurich, Switzerland.

Instead Qatar (where the temperature regularly climbs to 115 degrees in the summer months) will host the tournament.

The other bidders besides the U.S. and Qatar were: Australia, Japan and South Korea.

The winner for the 2018 World Cup was also announced today and went to Russia.

Reaction on the internets has been swift and brutal, the best/worst of which is going on on Twitter right now and can be found here.

Here's the announcement from FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter.
