The Puget Sound Business Journalreports today that Boeing just opened a new plant in Seattle that will be building the anti-submarine P-8A Poseidon. The plane is basically the same 737 commercial jet that almost everyone in America has eaten peanuts on. Only this bad boy's got bombs. Big ones. And after looking at it, we think it may just make that next SEA-LAX flight seem less like a business trip and more like a mission of critical national importance.
The planes will be assembled in Renton, then they'll head to the new production facility near Boeing Field where they'll get all their added goodies like: Raytheon Mark 54 torpedoes, depth charges and air-to-surface missiles.
They'll also get a complete communications and electronics makeover with things like: MX-20HD digital electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) multi-spectral sensor turrets. Not sure what those are, but they sound like the hotness.
The U.S. Navy just put an order for 117 of the planes for $40 billion.
