For a guy tasked with educating kids, Michael Kundu isn't very smart. Kundu resigned from the Marysville School Board yesterday a month after sending a racist e-mail to two other board members. In it, he claimed that "east Asians" and "Anglo-Saxons" had larger brains and were more intelligent than "Africans and their descenders," thereby explaining the achievement gap.
Kundu's e-mail cited research by Western Ontario University psychology professor John Philippe Rushton, a kook who also claims that science proves men are smarter than women. When Kundu was first reprimanded he backtracked from the remarks.
"I've learned that (Rushton) was definitely racist and used very questionable methods," Kundu told the Marysville Globe. "I would not have brought up his work if I'd known then what I know now."
But in his resignation letter yesterday, Kundu reversed himself again, repeating what he originally said and, in the true manner of all misguided douchebags, also claiming his right to victimhood.
In an e-mail to the Times, Kundu said he has always felt unwelcome by the board and the school-district administration.
"That's what happens when you try to make changes that impact any leadership's 'turf,' " he wrote.
He added that the "saddest part of this whole episode" is that society protects a student's right to free speech and debates on controversial topics, but it doesn't do so for all individuals.
Memo to Kundu: free speech gives you the right to say anything you want, but it doesn't protect you from the consequences of saying something particularly stupid. Thank god he didn't teach a civics class.
