The president of Highlands Soccer Club in Renton had a problem. Several checks written from the clubs' account had bounced. So the man called on the person responsible for handling Highlands' money: Jessica Kupferer, the club treasurer. And that's when things got weird.
When the president went to leave he noticed four suitcases sitting by the door. At that point he told police he got the sinking suspicion that Kupferer was still in the house, hiding from him. An idea confirmed when he reached the driveway and got a curiously timed text from her, telling him she was in Arizona.
When the president reviewed the clubs' bank statements he found out why Kupferer had reason to give him the slip: she'd charged more than $43,000 to the account, buying two laptops, bras and food for her family at stores like Nordstrom and Starbucks.
The 32-year-old has now been charged with first-degree theft.
