Seattle Police Officer Caught on Tape Punching Woman During Jaywalking Stop

UPDATE: The 17-year-old punched in the face has apologized to Ian Walsh, the cop who hit her. It all started when a cop stopped a man for jaywalking. Things escalated quickly from there as voices were raised and a crowd gathered. When two young women intervened an onlooker pulled out his camera phone and started to roll tape.

The altercation took place yesterday on Martin Luther King Junior Way South. The tape begins as the officer appears to be trying to arrest one of the girls for jaywalking.

Both girls, ages 19 and 17, were eventually cuffed and booked on suspicion of obstructing an officer. The one who was punched was checked out by medics and deemed to be OK.

The incident comes a month after an officer was caught on tape threatening to "beat the fucking Mexican piss" out of a robbery suspect he then stomped on the face. King 5 says Seattle police have decided not to review tape of this latest arrest, but we'll see what happens later once this thing circulates.

UPDATE: Deputy Chief Nick Metz told King 5 that police have concerns about the video.

"You obviously have to take into context everything that occurred from the point that the officer did make contact with the individuals until the situation ended. As I said before, we have some concerns about the tactics the officer used and employed at the time. Again, we did feel what occurred did deserve a review by the Office of Professional Accountability," said Metz.

...how a recent report shows that jaywalking stops often lead to "take downs" and how one in particular might be costly for the city...

...how our city attorney's call for "increased cultural sensitivity" in the wake of the incident makes it sound like he thinks pushing and shoving cops is just something all black people do...

...and finally, how jaywalking citations have mysteriously doubled in the past year.

UPDATE: The two met at a North Seattle community center in a sit-down brokered by the Urban League.

Walsh apparently accepted the girl's apology. So it looks like, if nothing else, the two principles involved in this minor controversy have decided everything is copacetic.
