Former Seattle coach Lou Piniella is back in town this week as his severely underperforming Chicago Cubs take on the severely underperforming Mariners. U.S.S. Mariner has a well-argued post about how Piniella, like all coaches, has an undeserved reputation for getting more out of his players than others. In short, not all coaches are the same. But generally they all win with talented teams and lose without them. There is one thing Piniella has always done better than all his peers: get mad.
Major League Baseball has a vise grip on any and all of its content. So if you want to see Piniella get pissed in Mariner blue, you better have it on VHS. Thanks to the proliferation of camera phones, however, there are a couple videos uploaded onto YouTube of Piniella blowing his proverbial top. Here now, four of the angriest.
Think "Sweet Lou's" propensity for flying off the handle came late in life? Allow this poor quality tape of his Yankee playing days to set the record straight.
Notice how the second-base umpire starts running towards his co-worker as soon as Lou leaves the dugout? He knows what's coming. (P.S. This one is relatively tame. Piniella doesn't even lose his hat.)
Nothing says "I disagree with that call, fine sir" like a little dirt on the shins.
The piece de resistance of Angry Lou videos. And the only one I know of that comes from his days with the M's.
The Cleveland Indians fan who shot this has to be an amateur videographer, because not many people had the means to sneak a mini-Handicam into Jacob's Field in 1998. Thank you, random Indians fan, for preserving and uploading this piece of Mariners' and Lou Piniella history. Sorry about your shitty team.
