Shawn Shipp Pleads Not Guilty to Backing Over 91-Year-Old Woman

As a general rule, you should avoid mowing down old ladies. Especially ones cool enough to fly float planes like this one.
Just based on a thumbnail of their two, very different lives, most would probably wish that the people in this next story had switched roles.

On May 3, Shawn Shipp was backing his Chevy pickup into a parking spot on Capitol Hill when he allegedly hit and ran over 91-year-old Marie Bush Fite. Fite was rushed to Harborview where she later died.

An officer noticed that the 34-year-old Shipp's eyes were bloodshot and his speech was slurred. He admitted taking Vicodin but denied drinking, which conflicted with the 0.16 BAC score he posted. Besides the booze in his blood, there were other reasons Shipp probably shouldn't have been on the road that day.

According to court records, Shipp is a repeat DUI offender. He'd also failed to register as a sex offender stemming from a child rape conviction in 1991. Shipp also has convictions for theft, burglary, assault and, to top it off, was driving with a suspended license that day.

Fite, on the other hand, sounds like the kind of lady who deserved a few more of her golden years. According to this obituary, she graduated from the top of her high school class and piloted float planes in the 1940s.

Shipp has plead not guilty to vehicular manslaughter. He's currently being held on $500,000 bail.
