Thomas Hare - One of the founders of the UK Electoral Reform Society, regarded as the inventor of the single transferable vote system.
Elections for the UK House of Commons are set for May 6th. According to Dr. Ken Ritche of the UK Electoral Refrom Society, "the election is already over in most of the country, thanks to a system that leaves most seats safe as houses. In large parts of our cities, and in whole counties, the winner could be announced today."
This is because like the US House of Representatives, the UK Parliament is elected with single member districts. In effect, the election is settled for one party or another because of the way voters are grouped in the district.
The Society has been advocating for proportional voting since 1884 and are pushing as strong as ever. Dr. Ritchie has deemed the government a "safe parliament" and with great irony offers most politicians, "A hearty congratulations to all our new MPs for a hard fought campaign. Having won the backing of their party members, they can now pack their bags for Westminster."
Prime Minister Brown is proposing election reform for the UK. I hope David Cameron, his Tories and others agree that this needs to be done.
Krist Novoselic is Chair of FairVote. Dr. Ken Ritchie also serves on the FairVote Board.
