Police are still unsure about who killed Cowell.
Roughly a month after her body was found lying on Columbia River bank, police say they have a cause of death in the murder of 17-year-old Mackenzie Cowell. According to a death certificate obtained by The Wenatchee World, the teen was strangled and stabbed in the neck.

Cowell was last seen leaving the cosmetology school where she took classes. Her car was found hours later in a remote part of Chelan County, with one set of footprints moving away from the vehicle.

Wenatchee residents are justifiably freaked by the murder, with local gun stores reporting a sharp rise in sales. A 20-member task force is investigating Cowell's death, including members of the F.B.I. But thus far no suspects have been named. Despite the fact that task force spokesman Doug Jones told The World that his team has already conducted nearly 700 interviews and eight polygraphs.
