America's least literate newspaper says Seattle is America's most literate city. USA Today (the one with the colorful pie graphs!) reports that Seattle earned its well-read reputation by beating out Washington, D.C., Minneapolis and, most importantly, Portland.
Just your average, every day Seattleite.
Jack Miller, the president of Central Connecticut State University, has been compiling the list for the past seven years. Miller's rankings factor in six indicators: "newspaper circulation, number of bookstores, library resources, periodical publishing resources, educational attainment and Internet resources."
The Number One ranking is nice and all. But I wonder if things would be different if someone just explained to Miller that Seattle isn't opening new bookstores, it's just shuffling around the ones that already exist.
