New Senator Al Franken's anti-rape amendment to the Defense Appropriations bill is just about the biggest political softball ever to arc towards the congressional batter's box. OK. So maybe "anti-rape" is a bit hyperbolic. But not by much!
Franken's amendment simply states that government contractors would be punished if they "restrict their employees from taking workplace sexual assault, battery and discrimination cases to court." It's a direct response to the absolute, f'ing travesty that is the case of Jamie Leigh Jones, a Halliburton employee who was detained for 24 hours in a shipping container by the company in their attempts to cover up the gang-rape she suffered at the hands of multiple male co-workers, then told she wasn't allowed to sue.
