It's Not Like South Seattle Needed Another Mess to Clean Up: Train Spills 1,000 Gallons of Diesel

Already home to a number of Superfund sites, South Seattle didn't really need a 1,000 gallon diesel spill. But that's what it got today, coming off of a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train at the 44 block of S. Hanford St. The spill occurred when two train cars mysteriously rolled down the track, crashing into another two. The spill's been contained, says the state Department of Ecology, but a cleanup contractor and the Coast Guard have been called in, the latter because of the proximity to Elliott Bay. Finally, juvenile humor note of the day--several of the Seattle clean-up sites are of the Leaking Underground Storage Tank variety. Code name: LUST.
