Longtime KOMO-4 reporter John Sharify, who left the ABC affiliate two years ago and is currently general manager for Seattle Community College Television, has struck a deal to do long-form general assignment pieces for KING-5 several times per month, beginning in September. One of Sharify's stories, a multi-part series that morphed into a short documentary on the homeless former basketball player Joe Pace, helped inspire this SW piece, which earned first-place honors at the National Association of Black Journalists' annual Salute to Excellence Awards last year. During his career at KOMO, Sharify won 31 local Emmys (he's snared two more since taking command at SCCTV), and took home the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for Writing, which honors the top broadcast news writer in the nation, three times.
