For a long time, Apple mercilessly flogged Microsoft with its John Hodgman-starring Mac/PC ads, in which poor Mr. PC (Hodgman) is constantly outwitted, outclassed, and generally outdone by his good-natured, better-looking counterpart. Microsoft finally fired back with its "Laptop Hunter" price-war ads, portraying Apple's computers as overpriced. The ads were effective, and Apple lowered its prices. Then Apple's legal department let Microsoft know that in light of the new, lower prices, the ads were no longer accurate. So Microsoft edited the ads.
Seems a pyrrhic victory for Apple, as it just reinforces the point made by the Microsoft commercials--namely, that PCs cost less, just not as much less as before. Here's hoping M-soft is equally unsavvy and, when Windows 7 is released, counters that the Apple ads are no longer accurate because the Hodgman character is no longer that dumb.
