Not sure how we missed an announcement of this magnitude, but Microsoft's new search engine "Kumo" is likely to be unveiled next week. (It already may be a step behind, says CNN.) The engine is part of the company's strategy of going after its competitors where they're strongest, failing, and then throwing more money at the problem. (See, e.g., Zune). But this time may be different: Sure, people use "Google" as a metonym for "web search", but that's just because they haven't yet had a taste of the Kumo.
