Ken Griffey Jr. can't field, and so far he hasn't hit. (He's currently out because of a colon condition.) But if he can continue to provide anecdotes like this from the clubhouse, perhaps he's worth his (relatively) small salary:
Last week he ensured each player had a white tie with a blue likeness of [Manager Don] Wakamatsu across the bottom, to comply with the team's dress code for traveling. Tuesday, Griffey gave out white ties with his own face on them for the team's trip to Missouri after the game.
The tie depicted Griffey wearing a Mariners pullover and a cheesy grin between two thumbs up. The tie's inscription: "World's Greatest Teammate."
Now, the Mariners definitely need to have a tie night. But if Junior's really serious, he should move beyond self-likeness, thumbs-up ties to self-likeness, thumbs-up tattoos, like Steve-O did.
