Remember Carl Spackler, the character played by Bill Murray in the movie Caddyshack? He's the greenskeeper obsessed with ridding the golf course of its pesky gopher population. In the movie's climactic scene--spoiler alert!--he attempts to finish off those gophers once and for all with a series of explosives he sends down their tunnels.

His detonation manages to win the tournament for Danny Noonan, though not to finish Spackler's adversary, the gopher, who subsequently emerges unscathed and gets down to Kenny Loggins' "I'm alright".

Well, Spokane Parks & Recreation is picking up where Spackler left off. In response to too many ground squirrels at its Finch arboretum, the department will be blowing them up:

"[The department will use] a special machine to detonate some of the 100 to 150 rodents that are tearing up the grounds.

The machine is called the Rodenator Pro. It pumps propane and oxygen into the tunnels of squirrels, then sends an electric spark that causes an explosion. The shock waves kill the squirrels and collapse their tunnels."

Or, sayeth Spackler, "To kill, you must know your enemy, and in this case my enemy is a varmint. And a varmint will never quit - ever. They're like the Viet Cong - Varmint Cong. So you have to fall back on superior intelligence and superior firepower."
