The Henry Art Gallery is bestowing a new $12,500 award to one of six regional artists to be named on Friday, April 17. Four on "the Brink" short list, announced last week, are from out of town: Alex Felton and Aaron Flint Jameson (Portland), and Gareth Moore and Isabelle Pauwels (Vancouver, BC).
That leaves two artists from Seattle: Isaac Layman and Matt Browning. Our contributing critic Adriana Grant has a nice write-up of Browning's last show at Crawl Space in December. And from August of last year, here's her take on photographs by Layman at the Lawrimore Project. (He's also been featured at the Henry and had work acquired by the city's Seattle Public Utilities Portable Works Collection; that's his image of a sink, above.)
The Henry's Brink award, underwritten by patrons and collectors John and Shari Behnke, will be granted biennially. Six dozen artists were nominated for the inaugural prize by Northwest curators. The winner will be honored at 8 p.m. during the Henry's annual open house.
