Let's Not Be Like Houston

Mind the train
Well, we got our first car/light-rail train accident out of the way. (The SLUT lost its cherry to an SUV last December.) An apparently oblivious left turner at MLK and Dawson--where left turns are prohibited--put her car in the path of a light-rail train that had been running behind her. (See a slideshow here.) While this is sure to raise the hackles of light rail haters, it isn't unusual for systems that run on streets, (and it's generally cheaper to run them on streets than above or below them).

Car/rail accidents always remind us of Houston, where such accidents abound. Sound Transit spokesperson Geoff Patrick said that part of the problem in Houston is cars turning right in front of trains that are running behind them, though much of the documentation appears to involve unwise left turns. (Update: It's also worth noting that the light rail on MLK runs on a median with a curb, while the Houston METRO runs on the street, allowing cars to change lanes in front of it.) Either way, here's hoping Seattle's drivers will be smarter than Houston's. If not, we'll get videos like this as a consolation:
