The Sonics have left, but Key Arena--at least the lower bowl--is still seeing action. Earlier this week, the Storm finalized their ten-year lease. And this Saturday, popular roller derby queens the Rat City Rollergirls will be holding their first bout in the Seattle Center facility. (Extra reading: The NY Times recently ran a piece on the rebirth of roller derby in its Magazine.)

Tickets to bouts at the league's former venues, hangars 27 and 30 at Magnuson Park, sold out notoriously quickly. The league says it's expecting crowds of 2,500-3,000 for Saturday's bouts, which would exceed the hangars' capacity. (The Key's lower bowl can hold around 5,000.)

Additionally, the JumboTron will be used to display the participants in

all their fearsome glory. And Saturday's bouts will feature

performances by DJ Boo Berry and belly-dancing troupe Skin Deep.

The only bummer is that the move to the Key will mean no more liquor

sales or beer cans, and thus a less rowdy experience than we would have enjoyed had

we been with-it enough to score tix at Magnuson.

(League spokesperson Josh Chaitin does note that "beer and wine will be available at concession stands" and that "the league is sponsoring the 'Crash Club'...a full bar/lounge in KeyArena that will be available to season ticket holders and major sponsors.")

Rat City Rollergirls bout, Key Arena, Grave Danger vs. Sockit Wenches, Derby Liberation Front Vs. Throttle Rockets, 5:30 PM, $19 adult, $12 kids. Buy tix here.
