Lorenzo Romar and Barack Obama: Kindred Ballers

Tonight brings the Oregon State Beavers and their now famous coach, Craig Robinson, to Montlake for a matchup with Lorenzo Romar's Huskies.

As you're probably aware, Robinson is Michelle Obama's brother (and thus Barack Obama's brother-in-law), who famously auditioned Obama for his sister via a game of pick-up basketball.

Of course, Lorenzo Romar was quite a baller himself, starring for the Huskies and playing several years in the NBA. (Someone even sold a vintage Golden State Warriors Romar jersey for $690.) And it's Romar, rather than Robinson, whose game appears to be in the same family as Obama's.

On to the comparison:

Size:

Romar: 6'1", 175

Obama: 6'1.5", 180

Dominant Hand:

Romar: Left

Obama: Left

Position:

Romar: PG

Obama: G/F

Role:

Romar: Reserve on first-place 1983-1984 Milwaukee Bucks team.

Obama: Reserve on 1979 Punahou High School Hawaii state championship team

Playing Style:

Romar: "Romar started the game being very defferential [sic]. Doing the little things that made him the perfect teammate. Fighting down low for rebounds, solid entry passes and off-the-ball screens."

Obama: "A savvy player. Setting screens, always moving to get open and help other people get open. He's proficient player. I'll put it this way: He's fun to play with. Some guys you hate playing with but he's fun to play with because he's not a selfish player."

Willingness to gun:

Romar: "Soon though, his team started to fall behind and that's when Romar morphed into Teen Wolf. Not Jason Bateman Teen Wolf II either. No, we're talking Michael J. Fox, i'm taking this game over Teen Wolf. I mean he was grabbing rebounds at one end, dribbling down the court, pulling up and sinking the shots in another guy's face. Romar was putting on a clinic and brought his team back within one."

Obama: His deep jump shots earned him the nickname "Barry O'Bomber" and he lobbied his coach hard for more playing time.

Work Ethic:

Romar: Once ran seven miles to school to make a practice.

Obama: Noted as the hardest worker on his team.

Appearance Belying Style:

Romar: "Romar showed up wearing puffy kneepads, causing a couple of guys to point and snicker, telling him that no college recruiter would ever eyeball someone dressed like that...[Later,] After showing up with no high school basketball résumé to speak of, Romar battled his way onto the Cerritos roster. He outplayed guys who had been high school opponents and all-league selections."

Obama: "His usual getup of black sweatpants and gray T-shirt (call it the Police Academy Trainee look) isn't likely to set a trend....'Here you have a laced-up professional off the court -- a 'white' persona -- who throws behind-the-back passes and busts crossovers...You'd think he'd have a basically stiff game, like Tim Duncan's, but no, he's showing up at a North Carolina practice or playing ball with [NBA guard Chris] Duhon. So the guy on the street says, "Whoa, he's got a little game!" It's part of his appeal.'"
