Thanks For The Transit, Uncle Sam

It's official. As expected the, the federal government will be footing the bill for $813 million, or about 40%, of the light rail extension from downtown to the UW. Amusingly, the web headline at The Seattle Times omitted the million part:

Sound Transit is asking for more money for the project from Obama's stimulus package, but sadly, said package is tilted heavily towards highway construction.  Gregoire's stimulus proposal, on the other hand, provides for highway improvements that should make one of Ron Sims' favorite ideas--bus rapid transit--more feasible on the Eastside.

Thanks to Uncle Sam for the contribution, and credit to Gregoire for getting it right.
