Tom Paulson at the P-I has a fascinating story this morning on the state Department of Transportation's avalanche forecasting and control team. My favorite part is this--one of the most bizarre images I've encountered in a news story in a long time:
As wet snow whipped by fierce winds slapped his face, Stimberis
stood in the middle of a deserted, snow-covered I-90 as fellow
avalanche guy Kevin Marston pedaled furiously on a stationary bicycle
about 30 feet up in the air on a metal stand.
Attached to the bicycle was a cable that, as Marston pedaled, lifted
a 25-pound bag of explosives up toward a steep hillside in an area
Sadly, while the accompanying slideshow has a lot of good shots, it doesn't have one of Marston on his elevated stationary bike.
