His was one of the five January gang-related fatal shootings in Seattle, but because Perry Henderson, 18, didn’t die until 12 days later, he got little ink. He was mortally wounded at a Jan. 26 house party, and his alleged shooter, Jonathan Hall, 18, has confessed, police say (in court, he has pleaded not guilty). As the video above reflects - a tender photo composition of "Pooter" Henderson from his baby years to a handsome and seemingly happy teen - he was loved and is missed.
Still, the tribute labels him a Holly Park Soldier, endlessly depicts Henderson and others flashing gang signs, and, in a note added on the MySpace Website, blames the South End, in a reference to the city’s ongoing Central District-SE turf war. Police say it was in part Henderson’s reluctance to back down that led to this. Respect or shame have always been factors of young mano-a-mano combat, but today, when kids carry guns like they once carried combs, it can get you killed. From a police affidavit:
Henderson and Hall had been feuding over a young lady…in the weeks prior to this party. At about 2330 hrs, Henderson and Hall started to argue outside the [party] residence. Henderson took his shirt off and was ready to fight….other partygoers separated them and started asking people to leave. Hall started to walk towards his car but Henderson still wanted to fight him….others were trying to control Henderson and take him back inside the house. Henderson broke free and…kicked Hall's car???Hall fired several shots striking Henderson at least four times. Henderson was transported to Harborview Hospital where he died on February 6, 2008….Henderson was shot once in the arm, once in the abdomen, once in the left buttock and once in the left foot. The shot to the abdomen caused internal damage to the liver duct and aorta. The cause of death is peritonitis caused by damage to liver duct and aorta. The manner of death is homicide.
It was, in the emerald place we think of as a peaceful oasis from crime, the 17th gang murder in 13 months. Dies a kid, dies a city.
