Mayor Greg Nickels announced today that he's expanding his army of red light cameras. The city put up six last year as part of a pilot program-- and plans to install an additional 24 in 2008.

Apparently police issued 16,539 citations in 2007, resulting in a whopping $1.1 million in revenues from penalties-- $101 a pop in 2007. (Tickets will go up to $124 in 2008). The city reports that the frequency of red light running generally dropped by 50 percent at the intersections where cameras have been installed. The number of injury accidents and the number of people injured also declined.

Says Nickels: ?There is no excuse for running a red light.?
