Important Animal Dies, Memorial Service Planned

Today's Seattle Times includes an article on the sad passing of Washoe, the signing chimp, who died in Ellensburg at the age of 42. (I clicked on the article because the Web headline, "Signing chimp that broke language barrier dead," was so badly phrased). Last month, Alex the talking parrot also joined the heavenly flock, occasioning an obituary in the New York Times and many, many CNN reports. And of course, last June, the Woodland Park Zoo's beloved baby elephant, Hansa, met its maker, earning 12 stories in the Seattle Times (including this one) and 13 in the P-I.

Perhaps it's time to resuscitate the Weekly's own contribution to the animal-obit genre?
