War 101

State yearly Iraq toll tops century markĀ 1st time.

Spc. David Watson was "a fine young man, he was...a handsome man, and big beautiful eyes, and always had something to say to cheer you up." Pfc. Luigi Marciante Jr. thought Iraq "was scary, he did say it was dangerous, and he was afraid." And Capt. Drew Jensen, who had two brothers, was "one of the three most wonderful children ever born." Their deaths bring to 101 - more than 100 for the first time - the number of troops with state ties who have died in one year in Iraq (previous high: 57 in 2004). There are, of course, three months to go. We've added 14 new faces, and, on our Afghanistan page, four new faces. Sgt. Matthew Tallman's mother speaks for them all. Her son "wasn't just a number. I want people to know Matthew Tallman existed."
