Best question at last night's city council candidates' forum in Georgetown:
If elected in November, which committee would you want to chair? (Terrific because it's telling about how much attention the challengers really pay to the intricacies of the job description should they win the seat. Great for incumbents too because it gives us a rare window into their true interests and legislative strategy.)
Judy Fenton: Transportation
Sally Clark: Land Use (Meaning the Urban Development and Planning Committee.)
Tom Rasmussen: Parks (Tom's running unopposed, but he came anyway.)
Bruce Harrell: Energy and Technology, "I think."
Venus Velázquez: Land Use, "And a new committee that includes Education and Health and Human Services." (These are already covered, but as part of other committees.)
Jean Godden: Budget, "That's where the money is."
Joe Szwaja: "All of them!" ...Transportation
Tim Burgess: Public Safety
David Della: (Silence)
David Della: (Still nothing)
To which Tim Burgess (Della's opponent) can't resist: "You can't think of one because you're not going to be there next year!"
To which the crowd gasps, Della smiles awkwardly, Burgess suddenly softer, pats him on the back, (probably thinks to himself, "Did I really say that out loud?")
Della recovers (finally) with: the Council. I want to chair the Council!
