Organizers of business PAC Forward Seattle have been mum since the whole DUI thing about whether they're still going to back city council candidate Venus Velázquez. Fact is, though, they've already spent more than $55,000 in support of her campaign. According to spending reports filed with Seattle Ethics and Elections last week, the PAC in September purchased postage, printing and a list from local media consultants Laguens Hamburger Kully Klose (totaling $41,513) and a poll by Don McDonough Associates ($14,750). A representative from the consulting firm said the flyer was sent to upwards of 40,000 Seattle residents last week and should have started hitting mailboxes Oct. 19-- two day's after Velázquez's arrest.
With what perhaps isn't the best image for Velázquez at the moment, the front side of the mailer shows a blur of shiny car lights traveling the Alaskan Way Viaduct with the words: "The future of Seattle is riding on this election." The other side reads: "Venus Velázquez- Leadership We Can Trust," and includes a pitch from council member Peter Steinbrueck (who told the Seattle PI his endorsement stands despite her alleged drinking and driving.)
As of the last report, Velázquez's campaign was in the hole more than $43,000. The Forward Seattle PAC still has more than $46,000 in the bank.
