The "surge" in Iraq continues, albeit not in the successful way the White House hoped. Our newest War Dead update now shows that 73 service members with state connections have died in Iraq this year. There are still five months to go but that's by far the worst annual local toll yet in the four-year war. Altogether, 237 active-duty soldiers with Washington state connections have died in Afghanistan, the Philippines, Pakistan, and Iraq since October 2001. They are wars that will go on forever for their families. That toll: 101 widows, two widowers, and 128 children.
