The P.I. reports today that Mitt Romney is leading all Presidential candidates in fund-raising in Washington State. John Edwardzzzzzzz is second, Barack Obama third, Hillary Clinton a distant fourth, and John McCain a distant fifth. While it's early yet and Al Gore's prospective entry looms large, smart money at this point would probably be on an Obama-Romney showdown in the general. But pardon my horn-tooting while I remind everyone that I predicted this match-up back when neither candidate was a blip on the polling screen and pundits were bracing for a surefire Clinton-McCain face-off. My words at the time: "Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney will end up being the [Republican] party's nominee, and will lose a squeaker to Obama, the Dems' brightest star since Kennedy (JFK, that is -- not red-nosed Teddy and his hard-livin' progeny)." That was my story on the day after Election Day '06, and I'm stickin' to it. Of course, I also erroneously predicted Clinton would decline to run in anticipation of the impending Obama freight train, but let's not get caught up in details, y'all.
