The state Department of Transportation this morning announced it cannot support replacing the Alaskan Way Viaduct with a tunnel, any kind of tunnel, period. In a just released report, the state DOT says: "WSDOT cannot recommend approval of this proposal as an acceptable viaduct replacement option because of serious safety and operational problems." That seems to leave two options for the city and voters: Erection of another even bigger Big Ugly or replacing it with expanded surface transit improvements. (And since we'll be without a viaduct for years either way, why not just tear it down now before that any-minute earthquake hits and be done with it?). Full report here.
