I'm thrilled that Whole Foods has opened a store at Westlake & Denny, really I am. But since the store's being dubbed as "downtown's first major grocery store" in like a century, here's a brain-teaser: If I live in Belltown, how is schlepping to Westlake & Denny any easier than going to the Larry's/Met Market, Safeway or QFC at the base of Queen Anne Hill? It's not. So let's call the Westlake & Denny Whole Foods what it is: a very savvy store opening in a neighborhood near downtown (Lower Queen Anne/Uptown also fits that description) -- Denny Regrade/South Lake Union -- where condo towers are going up like tents at Bonnaroo. If I lived downtown (I live in Lower Queen Anne, incidentally), I'd do my shopping on Saturdays at Pike Place Market. But since I don't, I'm wondering where the majority of downtown residents actually shop, if they shop at all.
