“Captive Creatures”

published: June 11, 2008

Erin Frost is a beast. In her stunning new series of self-portraits, “Captive Creatures” (on display through June 28), she’s like a wolf, centaur, queen cobra, and even a poppy plant. It’s her surreal way of exploring issues of transformation and power. But if that sounds like wonky art-speak, Frost’s work is direct, refreshing, and dramatic. She distorts reality using mirrors, plays with soft focus, and isn’t afraid of baring all for her camera (or dressing like a fox). Dark blacks, excellent compositions, and eccentric angles give her work an erotic twist. But no PETA protests, please. No animals were harmed in the making of these photographs.
