Emerald City ComiCon

Holy comics, Batman! Practicing your Robin lingo might be a good idea before donning your red-and-green spandex for the sixth annual Emerald City ComiCon (opens Sat., May 10; see Web site for full schedule). After all, competition in the costume contest requires superhuman sewing skills, and contestants have only a minute to impress within a rigorous set of rules. (Real swords and weaponry are prohibited; no Hulk-smashing, please.) But losers shouldn’t get their tights in too much of a bundle: the ECCC also offers the chance to meet more than 160 artists and have photos taken with TV personalities. (It’s Gigi Edgley from Farscape!) For the serious Comic Book Guy (yes, Simpsons comic creators will be on hand), there are exclusive limited-edition collectibles for sale. Aspiring artists should prepare their portfolio for professional review, or attend industry panels including “Get Your Geek On” and “Stickin’ It to the Man,” featuring Pulitzer Prize–winning political cartoonist David Horsey of the P-I, who knows a thing or two about that.
