Best New Art Gallery

Storefronts Seattle

This is something of a trick category, since there are no new galleries opening in Seattle. From Howard House to Catherine Person, galleries are only closing during this brutal economy. Except, that is, for the city-sponsored Storefronts Seattle program, which puts temporary galleries (and work studios) in vacant spaces all around Pioneer Square and the ID. Though the roster of artists and locations will soon change (see for updates and a handy PDF walking map), the program has showcased more than two dozen local artists since its inception late last year. And if the recession drags on further, the still-unleased retail space will give many more their shot. BRIAN MILLER
