Best Band to Die in the Past 12 Months

Throne of Bone

What was notable about the now-defunct Throne of Bone, aside from frontman Michael Frieburger's earnest, druid-esque persona and the band's fluid ability to shift from aggressive thrash onslaughts to more melodic detours, was their fondness for performing in unconventional settings. They sharpened their teeth playing the local house-party circuit and random dive bars, drawing an impressive crowd that included an unusual mix of indie-rock types, crusty punks, old-school classic rockers, and devout metalheads. Sadly, less than two months after the release of their David French-produced debut, they inexplicably called it quits. HANNAH LEVIN
