The first time I went to paseo's Fremont location looking for sandwiches, they were sold out. I ended up eating one of the greatest plate lunches of my life instead. Second time I went looking to score a sandwich, the same thing happened. The thing I really wanted?the medianoche, or Midnight Cuban, all full of pork and ham and banana peppers and swiss cheese on a pressed loaf of good Cuban bread?had been sold out for a long time. So what I learned was this: If ever there's a reason to get up early in Seattle, it's to get my hands on a Midnight Cuban of my own, one of the best sandwiches done anywhere in the city. Yes, there's a chance that there might be some left when you roll out of bed at the crack of noon. Everyone gets lucky once in a while. But if you want to guarantee yourself a sandwich, you're going to have to get to Paseo early, stand in line with the rest of the early lunchers, and just hope that no one ahead of you is buying for their entire family, office, or neighborhood. ?Jason Sheehan 4225 Fremont Ave. N., 545-7440 (also in Ballard)
