Best Place to Find a Mind-Stimulating Lecture

Even in a city as big as Seattle, sometimes it's a struggle to find new stuff to do. But what about catching a lecture on the "representations of the black market in postwar Japanese fiction," or delving into the surprisingly controversial world of Latin dance history? All that and more can be found at the University of Washington's Simpson Center for the Humanities events calendar. Anyone can post an event, so it's not just academic lectures on campus. Folk-music aficionados can learn about the Danish-American songbook at the Nordic Heritage Center, and Spanish-poetry lovers will be directed to a reading at El Centro de la Raza. A staffer says most of the events listed are open to the public, but it's always a good idea to check first. —Laura Onstot depts.washington.edu/uwch/calendar
