Aurora Avenue North

Korean women exude a seemingly effortless beauty, what with their flawless skin and lustrous locks. Some of this can be attributed to good genes, most of it to Aurora Avenue North. The notorious strip doesn't come off as glamorous, but the small mixed-use buildings along either side of the street house as many beauty salons as they do cigar shops and teriyaki joints. Frequented by Asian women, these establishments are able to deliver in both beauty and bargains, thanks to low overhead. To name a few: LG DeBon Cosmetic charges $30 for haircuts and $70 for a full head of highlights, while Studio JYC offers $12 brow threading, $15 lash tints, and $45 Brazilan waxes. The no-frills approach (c'mon, who really needs a cappuccino while in the chair?) bodes well for clients because they can actually afford to come back as soon as their roots start to show, rather than six months later. And such maintenance, of course, appears to others as fabulous genetic disposition. Shhh... —Erika Hobart
