Lauren Weedman

Why, oh why, did Lauren Weedman leave us? She of all people should know that Seattle desperately needs more laughs?especially at the city's own expense. Weedman, for those who don't know, specializes in one-person shows that re-enact moments in her (purported) life, relentlessly exposing her own foibles in the process. She exposes everybody else's, too, as she mimics friends, relatives, and strangers alike. In a telling moment in No...You Shut Up, the show she most recently brought through town, she portrays someone telling her not to use this conversation as material. We forgive her for this betrayal because she's so damn good at what she does. As a bratty teenager, a flamboyantly gay dad, or an overwrought mom-to-be at an adoption agency, Weedman is both perceptive and laugh-until-you-cry funny. We also forgive Weedman because she regularly brings her shows back to us, even while she's sadly chosen to live in a place with even less of a sense of humor about itself: Los Angeles. ?Nina Shapiro
