Best Reason to Stand in a Long Line at Midnight

The Cinerama Experience

Ever since superfans started lining up outside theaters across the nation to see the Lord of the Rings movies as soon as humanly possible, Cinerama has become the see-and-be-seen theater for everyone who can recite the Star Wars screenplays from memory and has read the entire Alan Moore library. (If you don't know who that is, you wouldn't understand.) Despite the crowd, it's not an indie theater. Vulcan owns it (cue Darth Vader theme) with AMC managing. But with that amazing curved screen and a sound system that puts you smack in the middle of the action, it's hard to beat the Cinerama experience. This is the kind of place where everyone is so excited, they cheer the second the hero appears in mask and cape, and that's just during the previews. Take even the dorkiest nerd and dress him as Aragorn—the tortured, long-locked, sword-hefting hero of Lord of the Rings—and the results are almost always hot.—Laura Onstot
