Best Place to Pamper Your Feet

The Woolly Mammoth

Back in the '60s, the Ave was a place for aimless hippies and college kids to mingle. Circling in the crowd was law-school dropout Patrick Andre. Andre, tall and hairy, was known to friends as the Woolly Mammoth, so in 1970, when he decided to turn his love of leather into a shop selling bags, vests, and the like, he used his handle. The Woolly Mammoth eventually evolved into a seller of shoes—of the kind favored by hippies. And to this day they still sell Earth Shoes and Birkenstocks. But squishy comfort has come a long way; you can now get Danskos with heels and Naots featuring bright swirls. In 1992, Andre expanded to sell even higher-fashion shoes, opening Five Doors Up, a trendier little boutique five doors up the block. Easy to walk in and sexy. Take your feet, they will thank you.—Laura Onstot
