Best Place to Feast in Lenin's Shadow

Royal Grinders

Fremont is home to some seriously delicious sandwiches, but the king among them is found only at Royal Grinders. Tucked behind the Lenin statue, owner Jai Suh and his hardworking (and very attractive) staff have been serving up grinders, panini, and gelato for about two years. Their refusal just to slap sandwiches together means your lunch may take a little longer, but watching them carefully inspect each one before handing it over is enough to make you feel like the Queen of England. If you've never been, their namesake sandwich is a good place to start. It's a roast beef, ham, provolone, swiss cheese, tomato, red onion, black olive, and pepperoncini masterpiece topped with their house-made zesty, garlicky, ranch-like grinder sauce all heated to perfection. The thing that really pushes this gem from peasant to aristocrat is the roll, which achieves the elusive balance of being substantial enough to hold it all together but not so heavy that it overpowers the ingredients. Then just when you think this place can't get any better, they tell you any drink you want is totally free.—Suzie Rugh
